Oh to be able to get away from it all. To my own private place, away from the crowds. A place of my own heart and design.
THIS year more and more American families will pile into their cars and take to the hills - or seashore - to seek refuge and blessed escape in their own little -or large-cozy retreat.
Sheer luxury, yes, but at prices, we have found, that are well within the reach of most of us.
We have run across many interesting people in the preparation of this site and the book that goes with it -in fact all the folks we've contacted were somehow relaxed and thoughtful types.
This, we discovered, was no coincidence.
These people had already tasted the rich, clear wine of freedom and pure air.
They had taken time out to live, and in living they had come alive.

A Cabin for All Reasons

Whether your idea of a cabin is a one room hideaway that you can retreat to for a few days of solitude, or a beautifully appointed “home away from home” that the whole family can enjoy for weeks at a time, there are many reasons that you should consider this type of investment for you and your lifestyle. In our busy society with work and family responsibilities constantly teetering in the unbalanced position, you may feel a great deal of pressure to find ways for your family to connect, or to just get away from the hustle and bustle of every day life. A cabin can be an excellent way to accomplish this without some of the hassles associated with travel. You can get this type of vacation home in almost any size and style. Some are brick, some are stone, and some are the “traditional” log style. Sizes range from a simple one-room style, to a cabin that has all of the modern conveniences down to a satellite dish and internet connection. In order to decide what size and style is best for you, you should take several factors into consideration. 1. What will you be using the cabin for? If you will use it as a hunting base camp for you and a couple of your buddies, you may just want a simple one room set up with a stove and a bathroom area. If you are planning on having gatherings with multiple families, you may want something more like a lodge with several rooms with various bed arrangements such as bunk beds, twin beds, or even queen or king beds. You might even have a master suite. Be sure to plan for plenty of room for the family to get together and play games or to just enjoy each other's company. 2. Where do you want the cabin? If you live near a mountain or a wilderness area it might be easiest for upkeep and other matters to keep the cabin nearby, but if you want someplace to travel to that is out of state you may want to plan for some type of upkeep schedule with someone in the local area-Or design the cabin with minimal upkeep needs. Utilities will be an issue, so make sure that you can get hooked up with the local utilities or private water, sewer, and electric providers. 3. What do you want your cabin built of? As stated earlier, cabins can be found in any manner of materials. Logs are “traditional” and can be very beautiful. There are also plans that you can purchase to build your own log model. But, if you want something else, there are many plans available for stone and brick cabins as well. Just check for local availability of materials and any building or zoning restrictions in the area. 4. If cost is a concern, try to build with a group, such as your family, or a group of really good friends. Have a contract drawn up for the long-term care considerations and how usage will be determined. It will make decision making easier. If you would like a way to spend more time getting back to nature and connecting with yourself, your family and your friends this can be an ideal solution.

AWAY OF LIFE"—perhaps best decribes log cabin living. These were the words of Editor Ray Gill when he recently paid a visit to this particular cabin in Babylon. Long Island. It is a product of the Ward Cabin Company of Presque Isle, Maine and serves as a yearround home and model.
As you can see, this is a threebedroom house with a goodsized living room, and a kitchen designed to provide adequate space for a dining area. The l0xl0ft breezeway is a pleasant spot to spend those summer evenings in addition to adding interesting lines to the cabin. Besides keeping you dry between the house and garage when the weather is bad, it's a good place to store firewood in the winter.
The twocar garage measures 20x22 ft. Besides the twocar capacity, there is plenty of room here for the garden tools and that workbench.
Whether it is a full or parttime cabin though, we still have to think about maintenance or upkeep. This is a man's house true enough, but from the upkeep standpoint alone, it also becomes very much a woman's house. Upkeep is nil. The outside of the logs actually require nothing to protect them from the elements and will, in time, turn a beautiful silvergray in color.
On the other hand if the thought of a silvergray house does not appeal to you. and you are partial to the natural light color of the Northern White Cedar logs, spray it with a couple of coats of Log Cabin Finish. The result is a warm honey color which will not darken appreciably with age. Stains, too, can be used on either the trim or, as some folks prefer, over the entire exterior.
