THIS year more and more American families will pile into their cars and take to the hills - or seashore - to seek refuge and blessed escape in their own little -or large-cozy retreat.
Sheer luxury, yes, but at prices, we have found, that are well within the reach of most of us.
We have run across many interesting people in the preparation of this site and the book that goes with it -in fact all the folks we've contacted were somehow relaxed and thoughtful types.
This, we discovered, was no coincidence.
These people had already tasted the rich, clear wine of freedom and pure air.
They had taken time out to live, and in living they had come alive.

Log Cabin Kit-How Does It Work?

Have you ever heard of a log cabin kit? No, this is not the Lincoln Logs you played with as a child. It is a kit to build a real, life-size cabin. If you have fond memories from your childhood of staying in a cabin with friends or family and getting away from it all to get back to nature, this may be the way for you to relive those memories for yourself or to pass them on to your children. A log cabin kit is a way for families of nearly every income level to achieve their dream of owning a vacation home. When people think of a vacation home, they often think of something that you may have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on, only to use it a few weeks out of the year. Most people just cannot afford this type of investment. However, if you have access to some fairly inexpensive land with water and other utility rights, a log cabin kit may be well within your means. You will need a little carpentry know-how, and you may need to contract out some of the more difficult work like plumbing or electric-but you can even build it yourself if you desire. Or, you can hire a builder to use the materials and blueprints from the kit to do it for you. You can find a log cabin kit online easily that will fit your needs, but first you will need to determine what your needs are. How many people will be using the log cabin? Will those needs change in the future? Can you make additions to the log cabin kit plan if you need to? How big is the lot? Do you want a deck or patio added on? What appliances, electronics and plumbing features do you feel are necessary? Once you have decided what features are necessary in your log cabin kit, you can begin shopping for one. Check out the company offering the kit with the Better Business Bureau to make sure that they do not have a large number of unresolved claims or complaints. How long have they been in business? Do they have a log cabin kit with all of the features you are looking for, and if not, will they customize one for you? Are their instructions easy to follow? Are the materials of top-quality? Each of these questions is important to consider when you are looking for a log cabin to live out your dreams.

THERE'S A PLACE on Michigan's famed Au Sable River where in bygone days two huge cedars fell into the water, forming a V. Currents cutting under the logs dug a hole in the soft bottom, creating a protected pool along a shaded bank.
Large trout frequently found this pool and claimed it as their own. Tailing in the current, they waited there for the riches of the river to drift in.
Harry T. Ward, a Lansing engineer and manufacturer's agent for steel, found this pool on one of his many fishing expeditions on the Au Sable. He noted the pool invariably was good for one big trout per trip. Within two weeks after one fish was taken there, another would find the V and wait there until Ward came along again.
When Ward decided the time had come to build a fishing cabin on the Au Sable, he picked a site on the south bank of the river across from that favorite pool of many memories.
At that point the level jack pine plains edge close to the river and then fall off on a gentle slope to the water's edge through a grove of birch and poplar, cedar and balsam, spruce and pine.
The cabin, about five miles east of Grayling, is situated on the brow of the slope about 100 ft. from the water's edge. A walkway of twoinch cedar planks, chemically treated to resist rot, drops from the front door of the cabin in seven easy stages to the river. At the water's edge is a landing stage a dozen feet square, supported by metal pipes driven into the bottom, where Ward can sit on a summer's evening and watch the trout rise to a fresh hatch on the river.
Overall dimensions of the cabin are 26 by 30 ft. An eightfoot screenedin porch across the front provides an airy, protected observation platform and auxiliary sleeping quarters for summer guests. More than half the main house is devoted to a 12½x25 ft. allpurpose room, with a fire
