How to Build Cabins
Oh to be able to get away from it all. To my own private place, away from the crowds. A place of my own heart and design.
THIS year more and more American families will pile into their cars and take to the hills - or seashore - to seek refuge and blessed escape in their own little -or large-cozy retreat.
Sheer luxury, yes, but at prices, we have found, that are well within the reach of most of us.
We have run across many interesting people in the preparation of this site and the book that goes with it -in fact all the folks we've contacted were somehow relaxed and thoughtful types.
This, we discovered, was no coincidence.
These people had already tasted the rich, clear wine of freedom and pure air.
They had taken time out to live, and in living they had come alive.

The Gypsy
Design by Hermanovski Here is a novel winter and summer cabin based on a simple leanto design and embellished with a lovely balcony, huge stone chimney and a wall of glass.
HOW Mr. Hermanovski still another hill (see The Eagle's Nest and The Hermitage) and he creates sheer fantasy! At least, the roof of The Gypsy is the sheerest we've ever seen. To say nothing of the wall of windows. In fact, we suggest decorative drapes or blinds for occasional privacy.
The concrete work for the cabin can be cut to a minimum by using piers instead of the solid foundation wall illustrated, leaving it solid only toward the hill for protection. Another variation would be to build The Gypsy as a combination boathouse cabin.
One important alteration, in this case, would be the elimination of the lowerlevel barbecue pit, which construction would then be utilized as the foundation for the upper fireplace. (See the section on Boathouses and Docks for other suggestions.)
As originally designed, however, The Gypsy is unusual enough without further innovations. It is, without doubt, a sunbather's paradise.
The cabin consists of three main parts: a onepiece roof slab, one floor slab (extended as a balcony) and the front wall with a huge chimney for the fireplace on the main floor and barbecue on the lower level. At the front of the house, and on this lower level, an attractive outdoor terrace harmonizes with the modern lines of The Gypsy.
